In order to keep as few points in their hands as possible when another player goes out, players try to merge their cards into legitimate sets and runs. A predetermined number of cards—typically seven or ten, depending on the variation—are dealt to each player at the start of the game. One card is positioned face-up to begin the discard pile, and the other cards form a draw pile. Players take turns drawing a card from the discard pile or the draw pile, after which they discard one card from their hand.
